Obituary of Walter L. Whitney

Walter L. Whitney Allegany, NY-- Walter L. Whitney of 3628 Morgan Hollow Road died Tuesday (February 25, 2003) in his home after a lengthy illness. Born December 28, 1923 in Allegany, NY he was the son of Howard and Bessie Whitlock Whitney. On December 11, 1944 in Westfield, NY he married Rita G. Button who survives. Mr. Whitney was a 1940 graduate of Allegany High School and resided in Allegany all of his life. He had operated a dairy farm at the family homestead for many years until 1965 at which time he became employed for Bradley Builders for several years. He then did independent carpentry contracting along with his brother-in-law Vernon Button until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of the Five Mile Baptist Church in Allegany where he served as a former deacon, as a Sunday School teacher and as a choir director. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and he enjoyed hunting and playing basketball. He also enjoyed music. Surviving besides his wife are 2 sons H. Mark (Kathy) Whitney and John N. (Barbara) Whitney, both of Allegany; 1 daughter Lynne Whitney of Allegany; 1 "adopted" son Stan (Carol) Harris of Friendship; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 2 nephews. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Friday (February 28, 2003) at 11:00am in the Five Mile Baptist Church. Rev. James Mitchell, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Five Mile Cemetery, Allegany. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the music department of the Five Mile Baptist Church, Homecare and Hospice 1225 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760 or to the Allegany Fire Department.
